A traditional or country style kitchen is represented by cabinetry, countertops and colors that are informal.
"The materials you use are so much better quality than what your competitors are offering - we are so pleased with our choice. The countertops went in yesterday and everything looks fantastic! Thanks again for the job you did on the cabinets. We love it!!! "
Shawna and Don - South Surrey

Historical Overview:

American Colonials of the Northeast helped influence American Country. The simplicity of handcrafted items helps define this style as well. Square shapes, straight lines and turned wood posts are all appropriate. This style also features sturdy, rugged and crudely constructed elements. This setting is usually very informal. Rustic detailing and open shelving is almost always seen in Traditional Country homes.

Cabinetry/Millwork:

Light finishes on maple, pine, oak, birch and cherry work well. Solid colors or other types of finishes such as distressing are also appropriate. Another authentic feature would be a beaded center panel on the doors.

Hardware:

Rustic finishes such as wrought iron and oil rubbed bronze fit in nicely as well as copper and antique brass..

Countertops:

Soapstone, granite, wood trimmed laminate and solid surface material with square edge profiles can all be used.

Colors:

Reflecting original dye colors from that period use reds, blues and yellows. Making it look as if the colors were applied years ago, you can also use muted tones. By using items containing small patterns, you can mimic textiles from this period, as well.

Surfaces:

  • Floors:
Use rustic tile, wood plank or other natural, rugged materials.
  • Walls:
Wainscot paneling or bead-board as well as white or off white painted walls work well.
  • Ceilings:
Wood ceilings or the same off-white painted ceilings with rough-hewn wood beams would be appropriate.

Accents:

To give the kitchen that old-world feel, cabinetry should have a more freestanding or furniture look instead of the fully integrated look of modern kitchens. You can also integrate hand-made rugs and wrought iron or pewter accessories.
