There’s something about fall that brings people back together.

Summer schedules settle down. Kids are back in school. Football is on again. The weather cools off, the windows open, and suddenly chili, soup and something simmering in the slow cooker sound pretty good.

And before you know it, everyone ends up in the kitchen.

Football Saturdays Start in the Kitchen

Here in Central Ohio, fall weekends and football tend to go hand in hand. The Buckeyes may be on in the family room, but somehow everybody keeps ending up in the kitchen.

Someone is putting out snacks. Somebody else is checking the chili. Friends are standing around the island talking about the game, and someone is opening the refrigerator every few minutes even though nothing new has appeared since the last time they looked.

That’s what a kitchen does. It becomes the unofficial gathering place without anyone deciding that’s where they’re going to gather.

The Kitchen Becomes Home Base

Fall gets families back into routines: school, practices, activities, work schedules, homework and dinner. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, the kitchen becomes home base.

It might be a teenager sitting at the island doing homework while dinner is being made. It might be a child telling you about their day while grabbing something out of the pantry. Maybe your grown kids stop by on Sunday afternoon and somehow stay through dinner.

Those everyday moments don’t always seem especially important while they’re happening. Years later, they usually are.

The Best Gatherings Aren’t Always Planned

A neighbor stops by. Friends come over after a football game. Somebody brings dessert. You put another pot of coffee on and suddenly an hour has gone by.

Nobody really cares whether everything is perfect. They just want someplace comfortable to sit, something to eat and people they enjoy being around.

A kitchen that works well makes those moments easier. There’s room to set things down. People can move around without bumping into each other, and the person doing the cooking can still be part of the conversation. That’s where good kitchen design really matters.

Then the Holidays Arrive

It seems like we turn the calendar to fall and suddenly Thanksgiving is right around the corner.

That’s when kitchens really go to work. There are groceries everywhere, recipes spread across the counter, multiple things cooking at once and more people in the kitchen than the kitchen was probably designed to accommodate.

But those crowded kitchens often produce some of our favorite memories: someone sneaking a piece of turkey before dinner, a family recipe being passed down, or everybody gathering in the kitchen even though there’s plenty of seating somewhere else.

We sometimes meet homeowners who think remodeling means creating one of those kitchens you see in a magazine where absolutely nothing is out of place.

That’s not really the goal.

Maybe the island doesn’t work the way you hoped. Perhaps the cabinets are showing their age even though the layout still works perfectly well.

For some homeowners, a full remodel is the right answer. For others, cabinet refacing can completely transform the look of the kitchen while keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout. New countertops, backsplash, lighting, hardware or storage solutions can make a big difference too.

The question isn’t simply, “How do we make this kitchen prettier?”

It’s also, “How do we make this kitchen work better for the people who live here?”

Years from now, you probably won’t remember exactly which Saturday you made that pot of chili. You may not remember the score, what everyone was wearing or whether the house was perfectly clean.

But you’ll remember the people who were there.

You’ll remember kids sitting around the island, friends laughing in the kitchen and holiday dinners that somehow took all day to prepare and twenty minutes to eat.
