Things to Consider When Remodeling Your Kitchen

A kitchen remodel can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. It can add tons of value to your home while completely revitalizing the heart and soul of your house. People move in and out of your kitchen all the time, and kitchens often serve as home offices, social gathering points and a wealth of other uses beyond just making food.

When you’re thinking of a remodel, taking these factors into account is vital. Learn some important things to consider when remodeling a kitchen, and where you can go to find the best supplies and design ideas for the project.

Plan Well Ahead

Before you do anything for your remodel — before you even unplug the coffee pot — do your homework, do your research and have a solid design plan in place. That means knowing what you can afford, what options you’ve got within your budget and what kind of timeline you have. You’d be surprised at how much not planning enough ahead of time can affect the end result. The more you plan, the faster the job will go, and the better off you’ll be at avoiding unpleasant surprises.

Put Function Ahead of Form

Style matters, no doubt, but function is king. Before anything else, you have to plan for your kitchen to do what it needs to do. Whatever the main function of your kitchen is, it needs to do it well. So as you plan, spend some time thinking about this. How many electrical outlets will you need? What sorts of appliances will you use most frequently? What kind of access do you need to pots, pans and accessories?

All of these things matter, but the degree to which they matter depends on how you’re going to be using the space every day. Few people, for example, consider the need for USB charging ports or Ethernet connections in a kitchen, but if you do your daily home-office work there, you’ll need them.

After Function, Then Style

After you figure out what you’ll need and have your plan for your kitchen’s functional requirements in place, then you can start looking at style. Despite being the last consideration on this list, style obviously counts immensely. You’ll want to feel welcome and at home in your kitchen, and you’ll want your guests to feel the same way. You’ll also want your kitchen to speak to your aesthetic tastes while offering a general appeal that will increase the value of your house.

This is a lot to consider, but implementing your style choices should form a big part of your plan. If you’re torn between styles, it’s often best to go for the simpler of two options, as a minimalist style is also generally timeless.
